Doctors Save Baby with Prenatal Surgery for Vein of Galen Malformation

A team of doctors successfully saved a baby diagnosed with a malformation in the vein of Galen, a deep blood vessel in the brain responsible for draining blood into larger veins that lead to the heart. The mother discovered this condition during an ultrasound at 30 weeks of pregnancy, which allowed timely decisions to protect the baby’s life. If left untreated, this malformation can cause brain damage, hydrocephalus, or heart failure.

To receive proper care, the family decided to participate in a clinical trial that offered the possibility of correcting the condition before birth. The procedure was carried out in Boston, United States, at 34 weeks and 2 days of gestation. Doctors made incisions in the uterus and the baby’s skull, using ultrasound to locate the artery and precisely correct the malformation.

Two days after the surgery, the baby was born without the congenital defect and with minimal complications. Doctors report that she is progressing well and shows no signs of side effects, marking a successful case of prenatal intervention that combines advanced technology with specialized medical care.
