Before the artificial cornea, he could only see the largest letters on the eye chart. After the procedure, he can now read all the letters clearly, showing a remarkable improvement. The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital has performed four artificial cornea transplants so far, with all patients experiencing significant vision improvements.
Made from a material with a lower risk of rejection than traditional transplants, these artificial corneas are especially suitable for patients more prone to rejection. It is expected that more ophthalmic surgeons will adopt this alternative, and in Mexico, tests are already underway to develop and evaluate artificial corneas, paving the way for future transplants with this innovative device.
