Laurice Borders, a woman from Connecticut who has always been very careful with her health, noticed a strange dark spot on the right toe of her foot. Despite visiting several doctors and undergoing multiple tests, she could not get answers about the cause of the spot, which continued to grow. Finally, at a health center, a podiatrist evaluated her case and referred her to a vascular surgeon, who was finally able to provide a diagnosis.

After an assessment, the surgeon warned that he would do everything possible to save her legs, although there was a risk of losing them. Laurice was diagnosed with peripheral artery disease, a condition that narrows the arteries and reduces blood flow to the legs and feet. This disease can develop due to habits such as smoking, a diet high in unhealthy cholesterol, diabetes, or high blood pressure. Laurice recalled that she had smoked in the past and emphasized that cigarette packs rarely warn that tobacco can also affect circulation and cause serious health problems.
To save her legs, Laurice had to undergo three surgeries at different times: one to replace her heart valve and two arterial bypass procedures. Although the surgeries were long and complex, she was able to stand again, and her recovery after the second bypass was better than expected. Today, Laurice urges everyone to pay attention to changes in their bodies and warns that if dark spots appear on the toes, it is essential to see a vascular specialist immediately.
