Why Billy Joel Stepped Away from the Stage

In May, Piano Man singer Billy Joel announced on social media that he would be canceling his upcoming concerts after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). This neurological condition, not widely known to the public, causes a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, creating pressure that can impact memory, movement, and other functions. NPH mostly affects people over 65 and, when diagnosed early, can often be treated successfully.

Common symptoms include difficulty walking, memory problems, balance issues, and urinary incontinence. In an interview with People magazine, Joel shared that the diagnosis was frightening at first, but he wanted fans to know he’s doing well and that there’s no reason to panic. He also mentioned he's undergoing physical therapy and following medical advice to stay off stage while he continues treatment.

Treating NPH usually involves surgery, where doctors insert a small device called a shunt to drain the excess fluid from the brain to another part of the body, typically the abdomen, where it’s reabsorbed. This helps relieve pressure and can significantly improve symptoms. With proper follow-up care and rehabilitation, many patients are able to regain their quality of life.
