Ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg is implanted outside the uterus, usually in one of the fallopian tubes. Rarely, it can be implanted in the cervix, ovary, or abdominal cavity. Because these areas are not designed to support embryo growth, pregnancy cannot come to term and can cause serious complications if left untreated.

Causes are not very clear, because several factors can be generated, including damage to the fallopian tubes due to some sexually transmitted disease, previous pelvic surgeries, or some inflammation in the area. It can also be caused by a congenital abnormality in the structures of the reproductive tract. Even hormonal treatments or fertility treatments can be a trigger, and the latter can increase the risk of it occurring.
