Urology additional procedures information
Cystoscopy – bladder scope test
A cystoscopy or bladder scope test is an outpatient procedure performed to diagnose and treat conditions in the bladder and urethra such as bladder cancer, bladder stones, and the cause of frequent urinary tract infections.
The procedure consists of inserting a small tube called "cystoscope" through the urethra to reach the bladder. The cystoscope has a lens that can project the images onto a video screen.
Male circumcision
Circumcision is a very simple procedure and consists of removing the skin covering the tip of the penis. The urologist uses a scalpel or surgical scissors to remove the foreskin, then using dissolvable stitches the remaining edges of the skin are sutured together; if any bleeding occurs the urologist uses heat to cauterize the area. This procedure can be done for medical reasons such as phimosis, recurrent balanitis, or if the patient will get a penile implant for ED.
Orchiopexy – Undescended testicle surgery
Orchiopexy surgery is performed to move an undescended or twisted testicle back into the scrotum and permanently fix it there. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, the urologic surgeon will make a small incision in the groin to place back the affected testicle. This condition is more common in children.
Prostate biopsy
A prostate biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure, that consists of inserting a probe in the rectum to obtain an image of the prostate gland, then using a small needle the specialist takes from 2 to 14 core samples of the prostate tissue.
Urethral Stenosis – Urethroplasty
Urethral stricture consists of the narrowing of the tube (urethra) where urine passes through the body.
The urologist will examine the patient's condition to determine what's the best treatment: medications, dilating the stenosis, or open surgery (urethroplasty). Surgery consists of removing the narrowed section or enlarging it, then the surrounding tissue is reconstructed to allow a better flow.
Varicocele
Varicocele is an abnormal enlargement on the veins due to a damaged valve. The procedure consists in removing the affected veins and restore proper blood flow to the reproductive organs. Surgery is considered based on the size of the varicocele, fertility goals, and if the patient presents symptoms of low testosterone.
