Bariatric weight loss surgery

Duodenal switch is a complex procedure that seeks to remove around 70% of the patients’ stomach and then connect a small part of the intestine directly to it. This is so the patient absorbs fewer calories and nutrients from food.
This procedure is done under general anesthesia and it can be an open or laparoscopic surgery. First, the surgeon removes 70% of the stomach so it takes the form of a tube. Then, the intestine is divided bypassing two thirds of it and then is connected to the upper part of the intestine which is called the duodenum. The stomach will hold less food and it will pass through a smaller extension of intestine.
Depending on the doctor and the needs of the patient, the procedure might be a robotically assisted surgery.
