In vitro fertilization - IVF information and locations in Mexico

In vitro fertilization or IVF, is a procedure in which an egg or several eggs are fertilized in a laboratory environment. This treatment is recommended for couples that have tried intrauterine insemination or aren’t candidates for other treatments.
During an IVF procedure, the fertility doctor will remove mature eggs from the ovary, then, the egg will be fertilized in a lab with the sperm. The embryos will be transferred and implanted into the uterus. In vitro fertilization takes several weeks as different processes need to take place.

Stages for in vitro fertilization

Follicular development
Follicular development or ovarian stimulation is used to help the ovaries to increase the number of healthy and mature eggs. During this stage, the woman will inject herself hormones for a period of 10 to 20 days. The growth is closely monitored by ultrasound and blood tests.
Egg retrieval
The egg retrieval is performed under mild anesthesia. Using a needle, the specialist extracts the matured eggs. This procedure takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
Sperm preparation
Following the egg retrieval, the male will provide a semen sample; from this sample, the specialist will select the healthiest sperm and will prepare it for egg fertilization.
Egg fertilization
The collected egg and sperm will be mixed in the laboratory; in some cases, each egg can be injected individually with the sperm (ICSI). After 16 hours, the eggs are checked to see if they have been fertilized.
The fertilized embryos will be transferred after six days of the fertilization (blastocyst stage)
Uterine preparation
Before the embryo transfer, the woman will begin to take hormones to prepare the lining of the uterus to receive the embryo.
Embryo transfer
After the blastocyst stage, the embryos will be ready to transfer. During the procedure, the specialist uses a thin catheter to deposit the embryos into the uterine cavity.
The number of deposit embryos depends on the woman’s age.
Pregnancy testing
A urine or blood pregnancy test is recommended after two weeks of embryo transfer. If the test comes back positive, ultrasound scans will be carried out during the following weeks.
